Introduction to Linux

Last updated: 21 Apr, 2025

What is Linux?

Linux operates as an open-source operating system which functions between computer hardware and running software applications without any cost. Just as with Windows or macOS Linux serves to direct file management and application execution and network connectivity functionality.

One of the main characteristics of Linux stands out because it is an open-source operating system: anyone can see and modify or redistribute its computer code. There exist numerous Linux versions (known as distributions or distros) because of this open-source nature.

Why Learn Linux?

  • The operating system format finds wide application in server environments together with cloud computing and DevOps systems

  • Runs on Android smartphones

  • Known for stability and security

  • It’s free!

  • Great for developers and system admins

A Bit of History

The Finnish student Linus Torvalds established Linux in 1991 as his initial personal development. His goal in creating Linux originated from his desire to develop a UNIX substitute that could be accessed without payment. Since its initial creation in 1991 by Linus Torvalds the global movement adapted into use across supercomputers and smart TVs among many other products today.

Where is Linux Used?

  • The majority of web servers function on Linux-based systems.

  • Cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud)

  • IoT devices (routers, smart home devices)

  • The operating system which runs Android mobile phones bases itself on Linux.

  • Desktops and laptops (Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint)
